Paul Estrem Remembered
(by Larry Lubbert)

As the obituary noted, Paul will be missed by several groups.  Habitat for Humanity starts a new house soon, and will miss not only Paul’s tools, but his skills and knowledge in putting them to good use.

His church will miss all the time and effort he put in maintenance, singing and as an officer .

Lions will miss his care on the Troll Trolley, and his willingness to move their grill and pop corn popper.

Most of the members on Luren are aware of many ot the things Paul did for Luren. He finally agreed to become a member of the board, and after several years of nagging by me, joined the Veterans Chorus the last Sangerfest. The most evident is his participation in opening and running the Fair stand.  He and Lois were tireless workers in getting ready and to insure smooth running.  He also has  supplied storage of our risers.  But there are several other things few Luren members may know.

Paul and I have met for breakfast at Burl’s on most Saturdays for the past two+ years (Dan Huebner has joined us lately)   The topic of conversation often turned to Luren.   He was very proud that he was able to print the 1976  Sangerfest booklet where he introduced the colored cover. But on many Saturdays  he would mention to me just where he found this great bargain.  He spent many hours looking for bargains that would improve the fair stand.  He would often tell me he went to this auction in Prairie, or Oelwein, or Cresco  to find something  to improve the stand.  He often communicated with a restaurant supplier in Waterloo to find just where he could find a new grill or stainless steel counters or other miscellaneous items. He found at least one and perhaps two of the new feezers we have been using. One day he attended a sale at some restaurant and found the styrene plates we have been using.  He was excited that he got them for a few pennies each. He negotiated with Quillens and the Locker in Spillville for better prices on the meat we use at the stand.

Not only did Paul find these items, he and several others redesigned the stand to make accommodations for installing these items. I doubt that there are any renovations at the stand in the past few years that Paul did not have some input.

Paul will be missed, not only as a voice in the first row, but for all the “little” things he  has done for us in the past.  He was a great asset to Luren and will be missed.
